With a little help from our friends...

As we have seen there is good software available to link your Psion to an OS/2 based computer. But transfering files to and from the PC is not all there is to do. We also have to convert Psion's file-formats to something that can be used with regular OS/2 software. And wouldn't it be nice if Psion's Agenda and Contacts could be viewed with Lotus Organizer, its StarOffice equivalent, or something else?

On this page you will find some utilities for this kind of tasks. And also an add-on to give the PSI Utilities a PM-interface. Utilities that I have tested are given a 1-to-5 rating based on my own experience. Programs that I've written myself can be easily recognised by the 'Home brewed software' label.
If you know any other programs that should be listed here: please let me know by email (there is a 'mailto' tag at the bottum of this page)!

Program PMPSI
Author Peter van der Kamp
Description A simple graphical shell that lets you use most of the PSI Utilities from the OS/2 desktop. It's 'not only looks' for it adds one extra feature: a print-button that makes it possible to sent a file on the Psion directly to the printer that is connected to your OS/2 computer.
PMPSI has been developed with drDialog. This needs to be installed to make use of PMPSI.

PsiConv can be downloaded seperatly or as part of the PsiFTP distribution (see information about PsiFTP on the 'native OS/2 solutions' page). Supported file formats are:

From Psion- to PC file-formats

  • EPOC Word to: ASCII, HTML3.2, HTML4.0
  • EPOC Sketch to: BMP, 24-bit BMP, JPG, TIFF, PCX, PNG, GIF, GIF87a

Program PsiConv/PM
Author Hans Hockx
Description PsiConv/PM is a Presentation Manager frontend for the PsiConv utility described above. It allows you to convert Psion files using a convenient graphical interface. It doesn't do any conversions itself. It just keeps you away from the command prompt and sends the proper command string to the PsiConv utility. I made PsiConv/PM using good old VisproRexx Bronze 2.1. A visual development tool for REXX that was developped by HockWare back in 1995.

Program nConvert
author Neuon (Richard Betts)
Description nConvert is a rapidly developing conversion utility that has to be installed on your EPOC based Psion PDA. It's not perfect as it doesn't convert bullets and accents the way it should. But if development goes on it is potentialy a very powerful utilitiy. Let's hope that Lotus SmartSuite and StarOffice file formats will be supported in the near future! The current version 1.1 is capable to do the following conversions:

From Psion- to PC file-formats

  • EPOC Word to: HTML 4.01 Transitional, RTF 1.5 or plain text;
  • EPOC Sheet to: HTML, CSV, Microsoft Excel;
  • EPOC Jotter to: HTML, RTF or EPOC Word;
  • EPOC Sketch / MBM to various image file formats

From PC- to Psion file-formats

  • Microsoft Excel 4.0, 95, 97, 2000 to: EPOC Sheet
  • Microsoft Access '95 and '97 to: CSV (for import into EPOC Data)
  • RTF (all versions) to: EPOC Word
  • CSV (text) to Symbian Sheet
  • Netscape bookmarks to: EPOC Web Bookmarks
  • Plain text file support, including Unicode to EPOC Word or EPOC Program.
  • Various image formats to each other: BMP, PCX, EPOC Sketch, EPOC Bitmap (MBM), JPEG, LBM, TGA, XBM, TIFF and GIF.
Price shareware, registration fee: £ 20,-. Neuon don't take registrations any longer.

Program 2Convert
Author 2K Systems
Description 2Convert -like nConvert- is a conversion tool that has to be installed on your Psion. It can only run on EPOC R5 platforms (Psion 5MX, Revo or newer). This utility has been developped and brought to market by X-Soft and was named X-Converter. Since X-Soft has been taken over by 2K Systems the name of the utility has been changed to '2Convert'. The current version of 2Convert will do the conversions mentioned below.

Bi-directional conversions:

  • EPOC Word to: RTF 1.5
  • EPOC Word to: HTML 3.2
  • EPOC Word to: Text (ASCII)
  • EPOC Data to: dBase (memo fields compatible with Foxpro 2.6, dBase III)
  • EPOC Data to: Text (ASCII)
  • EPOC Sheet to: MS Excel (import of all versions to 2000, export to 2.1)
  • EPOC Sheet to: Delimited Text

Program C2F
Author Malcolm Bryant
Description C2F is a small application that can be installed on EPOC based Psion PDA's. It reads your Contacts database and writes user-selected fields to a standard comma- or tab-delimited ASCII-file that can be imported in any PC-based application that can import comma- or tab-dilimited files. You can use this utility also to transfer your contacts to Psion's own Data application.
It works fine, but it only uses the standard english fieldnames from the Psion's Contacts aplication. Even on a Psion that is using another language. Also any fieldnames that were edited are lost in this proces. The data is all there, but you may have to edit the fieldnames in the ASCII-file by hand to correct this before importing data into another application.
C2F's output can be used to import your contacts in Lotus Organizer for OS/2. Check this 'how to-guide' for a description of this proces.

Program Contacts Viewer
Author Hans Hockx
Description Contacts Viewer is an easy to use application to view your Contacts data on the OS/2 desktop. It works directly on a TAB-delimited ASCII file as created with the C2F utility mentioned above. I made PsiConv/PM using good old VisproRexx Bronze 2.1. A visual development tool for REXX that was developped by HockWare way back in 1995. See the 'how to-guide' guide for details about how to set up and use Contacts Viewer.
Version 2.x of Contacts Viewer can be configurated in a number of ways allowing you to use the program to view data from other sources than the Psion Contacts application as well.

Program ListBuilder
Author Hans Hockx
Description Originally designed as a helper application for Contacts Viewer, the current version of ListBuilder can be used for many purposes. With the available set of features it can be used instead of several dedicated filters written in REXX or any other language. The program lets you:
  • substract selected fields (create a new list) from the source file and write this information to a new file
  • create a new list with the same information but with a changed sequence of information (fields) in each record
  • convert comma delimited files to TAB delimited files
  • convert a file that has fixed field length, without delimiters between the fields, to a comma or TAB-delimited file. This will also remove any trailing spaces form each field
  • write a new file with records that are selected on the content of one particular field (operators supported are 'equal' and 'not equal' to a user supplied text
  • combine data from different sources into a new file
  • save list definitons for future use

Program RevoSync
Author Stephan Joerrens
Description This utility consists of two parts. The first part has to be installed on your Psion. It reads data from the Agenda application using AGENDA2.OPX and and writes everything to a text-file with special tags for each field. The second part is a Rexx utility that can be run on your OS/2 PC to do a simple sync with a Lotus Notes Agenda that is also exported to text. The resulting file can be imported into Lotus Notes or back to the Psion's Agenda.
In spite of its name RevoSync will also work with the Series 5 and above. If you are able to program in Rexx it should be possible to adapt the second part of this utility so that you can import data in Lotus Organizer for OS/2. Please let me know if yo do!

Program vCal
Author Malcolm Bryant
Description vCal is a small program which creates a vCalendar file from an Epoc Agenda or an Epoc Agenda from a vCalendar file. If you are using StarOffice on your OS/2 computer then this is the utility for you! Since the Schedular from StarOffice is able to import (and export) data in vCalendar format, you can use vCal to swap data (appointments and tasks) from your Epoc Agenda to StarOffice and back. The program doesn't allow you to synchronize the two agenda's. But when importing data into the Epoc Agenda you do have a choice between 'overwrite' or 'merge' when new entries are imported. Check the 'how to-guide' for a description of this proces.

Program Agenda Dump 2.0
Author Kabestin Software
Description What's in a name? Install this little utility on your Psion Series 5 or above and you are ready to make a dump of the data in your Psion Agenda. It lets you specify the date range (whole agenda, year, month, week or day), what data you want to export (appointments, events, anniversaries, ToDo's), input and output filenames and location etc. The interface is not very intuitive because you have to use the buttonbar to input your wishes for most of the fields. On my 5MX the program would crash occasionally when generating the dump.
All that said, it does give you a comma-seperated dump of your Agenda that can be imported (not synchronised) in Lotus Organizer for OS/2. Check the 'how to-guide' for a description of this proces.

Program Infrared drivers v2.0 for OS/2
Author Oliver Stein
Description These drivers are developped for IBM Thinkpad notebook computers. They promise to be more functional than the standard OS/2 IrDA drivers that come with OS/2 Warp 4 because an IRCOMM.SYS driver has been added. This driver lets you assign a virtual COM-port to connect with IrDA devices like the Psion.
Although designed for IBM Thinkpads there is a chance that these drivers wil work on other devices as well, depending on the I/O controler chip used. I've tried to load these drivers on my desktop computer using an EPoX EP-58MVP3C-M mainbord with Winbond W83877TF I/O controler. Without any luck because the IRCOMM.SYS driver would hang the system when loaded. Please let me know if these drivers work for you and allow you to make an infrared connection with your Psion PDA.

Program NConvert 3.01
Author Pierre-E Gougelet
Description In spite of it's name this is not the same program as Neuon's nConvert mentioned elsewhere on this page. NConvert is a very powerful command-line utility that is able to read and convert hundreds of graphic file formats from and to each other. This includes the graphic file formats from 16 and 32 bit Psions. According to the docs it should be able to convert graphic file formats like JPEG, GIF and BMP to and from the native Psion graphics file formats (PIC for series 3 and MBM for series 5 and above). NConvert is available for many different operating systems including OS/2. On the website there are a few more utilities available but not for the OS/2 platform.
