Symbol Variations

''Old type of Ga-den Thangka''
The order of the eight Buddhist Symbols on the earlier Ga-den Thangkas is as follows: the umbrella, the golden fish, the lotus, the endless knot, the wheel of law, the banner of victory, the conch shell and the holy vase.

"Later type of Ga-den Thangka"
The order of the eight Symbols of the later types is: the umbrella, the golden fish, the holy vase, the lotus, the conch shell, the wheel of law, the banner of victory and the wheel of law.

On this page you can find an overview of all variations of the Buddhism Symbols you can find on the Tibetan Ga-den Thangkas as far as I know.

    The Umbrella

    The golden fish

    The lotus flower

    The endless knot

    The wheel of law

    The holy vase

    The conch Shell

    The banner of victory

Number of varieties.
The exact number of varieties is not known. Not every variation of e.g. the golden fish will be found with every variation of the lotus flower. But there are still a lot of different Ga-den Thangkas. For instance if there were only two varieties of each of the eight Buddhism Symbols, we would already have a total of 256 varieties (two to the powder of eight).  Since the number of varieties on each of the symbols exceeds two and because there are a lot of other variations besides the Buddhism Symbols the total amount of different Ga-den Thangkas is enormous.
